Stack-On Organizers

Every garage has boxes and shelves full of little stuff – screws, bolts, washers – you know the kind of things that come in small boxes that get torn the first time you use the nails or screws that are inside. So what do you do?

I suggest that you use the “Stack-On” type organizers. You can find these in varying sizes, from the eighteen drawer organizer to the sixty drawer organizer like the ones pictured to the right and below the right.

You can separate and catalog your small pieces to your heart’s content. You can color code sets of inter-related pieces or have one set for electrical parts, another for plumbing, and still another for electronic gear. I love these things, they make organizing small parts so easy and convenient. I have them in my garden office, in the sewing room for buttons, needles, thimbles, and thread as well as one in the laundry room. (It is so much easier to replace a button when the shirt is right in your hand rather than putting it in a pile and  then trying to remember that you needed to replace that button on your husband’s favorite work shirt.)

The point is, that every room has hundreds of small things that need to be corralled into some useable format and this one works and is easy. And isn’t that what you want your space to be – functional and easy.

Bucket Caddie

Another handy storage option is a bucket caddie. This is like an apron that you put over a bucket. You then have a type of carry-all as you can see to the (left).

Pegboard Systems

Pegboards certainly help if you hang racks on them which gives you a place to hang tools and or shelves. I’m sure you have seen pegboards on which someone has drawn an outline around the tool while hanging in the correct spot so whoever has borrowed it, will know where to put it back.

Often the garage is the largest room in your house, and it may also be the most neglected. Too often, things get piled up in corners or lost under stacks of papers and books or boxes. Have you ever been absolutely certain that you have a particular item or tool somewhere in the garage, but you just can’t put your hands on it?

Isn’t it time to take control of this space and make it work for you, so you can find things efficiently? Or perhaps your goal is something as simple as having a neat and organized corner where you can play cards with the gang once or twice a month. In any case, an organization can make it so.
